The Opry first began in 1977 as a fundraiser for cerebral palsy. The event was organized for years by Elsie Clark, a member of Nashville’s BPW, who was better known as Nash County’s own Minnie Pearl.
Clark was one of the many performers of the event and continued to organize and perform at the Opry until 2005. Clark passed away in January 2006.
But in 2007, the Opry came back as strong as ever, with over 200 attending the newly named Elsie Clark Memorial Nashville Opry.
The event is now known as a local fundraiser for the BPW’s Hazel Valentine Scholarship. Hazel Valentine was a charter member of Nashville’s BPW; passing away in 1997 at the age of 101.
